Reflecting on 2024

Itʻs hard to believe we debuted our architectural tours of Ossipoff Cabin only a year ago—our first one was in November 2023. It was also 2023 that people began joining Island-Boy and Pua Hana/Paiko to make lei at Pālehua. In 2024, we introduced lauhala workshops with Naomi Nascimento and expanded the range of workshops to include kokedama and floral arranging. We offered Valentine’s day dates and couples photos. It was a year of learning and growth, setting the foundation for what’s to come. To put it into numbers, in 2024, we hosted 29 public events with nearly 800 people attending. If you were one of them, THANK YOU.

Itʻs also been a year of mauka cabin revivals, with the amazing renovations of Pilihonua, Hale Koa, the Mauka Education Center, and most recently Mahaholokai (pictured above) by Citron and Date. Next year, we’re excited to host group retreats and talk story at Hale Koa, and to find more opportunities to bring people to Mahaholokai for workshops and as a base for volunteer work.

In 2024, we brought on our first full-time employee, āina programs manager Aliah Irvine! If you were able to join us for a community work day led by Aliah, you know her abundance of ʻike and her passion for Pālehua. In her daily work she cares for numerous kīpuka throughout the mountain. Through Aliah’s efforts, PCI totaled 300+ volunteers and 150+ hours of volunteer work and 778 new plantings in 2024. We look forward to plenty more in the year to come.
