Palikea Kāhuli Snail Enclosure Workday with Oʻahu Army Natural Resources Program
Wednesday, February 25th from 8am - 5pm
Pālehua Conservation Initiative volunteers are invited to join a snail enclosure workday at Palikea led by the Oʻahu Army Natural Resources Program! Spend the day hiking to the site and removing invasive weeds in one of the Oʻahu Army Natural Resources snail enclosures, taking time to explore the native plants and animals in the area.
About Palikea: Palikea is located at the summit of the southern end of the Honouliuli forest Reserves and is accessed via Pālehua (Gill ʻEwa Lands). Steep precipices border the eastern and western portion of the MU, with Puʻu Palikea being the headwater of Palawai gulch on the east, and Hālona/Nānākuli gulches on the west. This managed area contains two native vegetation types: mesic-wet forest and mesic mixed forest.
Some of the common native species here are Koa, ʻOhiʻa, Kolea, Papala kepau, and Hame. It is home to many endangered species, such as kāhuli, hāhā, Oʻahu ʻElepaio, manono, Hawaiian picture wing fly, and pāmakani. Views from Palikea include Puʻu Palikea, Mauna Kapu, Halona, Nānākuli, For the mālama portion of our day, we will be clearing a mixture of invasive weeds at our snail enclosure. Some of the weeds are, but not limited to, Koster's curse, strawberry guava, basket grass, and common asters. (The herbicide Garlon Ultra 4 will be used to control the woody species with the proper PPE.)
What to expect: The trail to the worksite will be slippery and has some sections of exposed areas and accessed via ladders and webbings. This trail is not for those who are afraid of heights.
Difficulty: Moderate; several sections with elevation gain. Not for the acrophobic; there are some steep drop-offs in several sections of the trail.
What to bring: Long pants, long sleeve shirt and shoes with good traction. Lunch and water (at least 2 liters) are a must...there is no water source in the mountains. Packing list will be sent upon signup. All gloves will be provided. Please note: Long sleeves and long pants are required for this volunteer trip. A long sleeve shirt is required during the weeding portion of the day (you may bring an extra shirt to change into if you prefer).
Meeting location: Makakilo Community Park (92-1140 Makakilo Dr, Kapolei, HI 96707). Please park on the street. We will meet in the parking lot.
