Join us for a community work day at Pālehua!

In the recent Kona Low storms, the stewards of Pālehua have spent many days repeatedly clearing fallen trees to reopen the blocked road and restore access and power. Up here, rainfall brings rapid growth. Now with the return of the sun, invasive grasses have quickly taken hold.

Help our stewards clear these grasses, reducing wildfire risk and continuing the preservation of a sacred place of observation. The day will include opening and closing protocol, along with time for reflection.

Efforts have been made to locate this site in ancient oral tradition.  What we do know is that since the time of Kakuhihewa this area was known for being a wahikapu that gave our practitioners the ability to observe all the Akua around us and within us. The Pā is fairly large, with several unique features, and there is evidence it may have played a role in makahiki and navigation. Please come join us for a day of laulima and engagement with our kahiko lāhui in this wahikapu.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own weedwackers, with fuel and line. We will also provide fuel and line. Additional details will be provided to registrants.

Please wear shoes, long pants, long sleeves, sun protection, and bring a jacket, hat/sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks, and pack your lunch. Gloves will be provided but volunteers are welcome to bring their own.

Participants must arrive on time to be let in through the gate and guided up a private road. Groups must be guided up the mountain together. Late arrivals cannot be accommodated.

We will provide a water jug and a light snack.

Communication will be sent to the email and/or phone number provided at checkout prior to the work day. If you are later unable to attend, please email maukacabins@palehua.org.

Weʻre excited to work alongside each of you. Thank you so much for joining in on our journey to mālama iā Pālehua.

When "checking out," please enter your preferred contact phone number and email address, as this is where we will reach you with logistics and any other event details. Please enter your emergency contact info as well.

Do not hesitate to email with any questions.
